The Plainsmen grapplers were off to Golden, CO for a duel against Colorado School of Mines. The Plainsmen were excited for the opportunity to face a new opponent that they have yet to see in opens this year. They knew it would be a higher level of competition going against potential juniors and seniors, but they were ready.
The three Plainsmen to score points would be Collin Metzgar, Sammy Eckhart, and Dylan Buschow. Although these three were able to help add 13 points to the team score, Northeastern would fall 33-13. The men had a great showing, but overall it was a learning moment for all.
Metzgar would wrestle in the 125's and would win with a 5-0 decision to give NJC the 3-0 lead. Next would be Paul Cooksey in the 133's who would lose in overtime 8-6 with a takedown. In the 141's, Sammy Eckhart would win with a major decision 22-10 and give the Plainsmen another four points, and give them the lead 7-3. In the 149's, Ernie Quintana would be pinned in the second period and now the Plainsmen would be trailing 9-7.
Deron Solomon, who did well last time in the 157's, would lose by decision 9-4. Captain of the team, Justin Anderson, would lose to a tough opponent by a technical fall in the 165's. Kevin Overlin would have a rough go in the 174's as he would lose by pin in the second, which would now have the Plainsmen behind 23-7. There were a lot more wrestling left in the duel, so the Plainsmen knew if they wrestled hard and wrestled smart, they still had a chance at defeating the Orediggers.
In the 184's, Jose Rodriquez would lose by a major decision 13-5. Dylan Buschow brought tremendous energy in the 197's when he pinned his opponent in the third to give NJC a hard-fought six points. Last would be Zach Rowland in the heavyweights, and he would be pinned in the first. Despite the score being 33-13 in favor of the Orediggers, the Plainsmen gave them a run for their money. A few points here and there would have Northeastern right in there competing for the win.
The entire Plainsmen team will travel to Doane for an open on Saturday December 9.
