Northeastern Wins District B Championship
Nov. 9, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The final match of the Region IX Championships featured familiar rivals Northeastern Junior College and Western Nebraska Community College facing off for the final NJCAA National Championship berth.
The strong serving of Western Nebraska led to a fast and strong start leading Northeastern by as many as seven points. Multiple errors by Northeastern and good ball control by Western Nebraska led to a 25-15 set one finish. Set two began with teams exchanging points and long rally's. At point 21, NJC gained a two point lead on a kill by Jelli and a stuff block by Sydney Krites and Raven Burns. Two more kills by Sydney Krites closed out the set 25-23. The third set wasn't much different than the second as lead changes and ties were plentiful. Northeastern took advantage of strong serving by Devin Ruble to take small lead 17-14. Western came storming back to tie the game at 18 and then 19. Northeastern took a 22-19 lead on a Sydney Krites and kill and stuff block by Raven Burns. Out of the Western timeout, #1 Karen....hammered home a kill to close within 2. With a two hitting error and blocking error, Northeastern closed out the set 25-21. Western jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead before Northeastern called time out. Out of the break, Western score two more points on kills by #17 and #1. NJC used their final timeout of the set trailing 8-2, and fought back into the set to tie the game at 18's. WNCC took a time out with NJC leading 20-19 but that didn't stop the momentum and Northeastern finished out the set and match win 25-21.
Northeastern will be the District B from Region IX and play in the NJCAA National Tournament, Nov 21-23.
