Otero Wins District A Championship and Advances to the NJCAA National Tournament

 Northeastern Squeaks by Western Wyoming


Nov. 7,  2019, Sterling, Colo. — The District A Championship Match of the Region IX Tournament featured South Sub Region foes, Otero Junior College and Northeastern Junior College.  The two teams were very familiar with each other as they split victories during the regular season. Northeastern came into the match off an exciting five set thriller over Western Wyoming and Otero with an impressive win over Western Nebraska in three against a team they had lost to in their previous two meetings in the regular season.

Set one was all Otero Junior College as they ran out to a quick lead and never looked back finshing the set 25-15.  After several ties and lead changes in the second set, Northeastern answered with a late run to take the set 25-21.  Much of the same occured in the third with Otero pulling away after 16-16 tie to go up 2-1 on a 25-20 set victory.  Northeatern took the fourth set 25-22, forcing a fifth set.  Otero rushed out to a 4-1 lead before NJC broke the momentum with a time out.  NJC pushed back into the set by tying the set at 7-7's before Otero took the lead at 8. NJC used their second time out at 7-9 and won back the serve to pull within one point.  Otero quickly sided out and then rattled off 2 straight points to lead 13-9.  A late push by Northeastern forced OJC to take a time out at 11-13.  Northeastern was a close as 13-12, before Otero finished the match 15-12 and the District A Championship.

Leading the way for the Rattlers was Tournament MVP, Antia Vallecas who led the team in kills and digs recording 17 kills and 31 digs.  Brilane Manchego, who was also selected All Touranment finished with an impressive 28 digs and 45 assists.  Macie Magallon (15 kills, 6 assisted blocks, 1 solo block) and Kelsey Garcia (25 digs, 5 assists) were also named to the All Tournment team.  The Rattlers are 23-8 and will be one of two teams representing Region IX at the NJCAA National Championships held in Hutchinson, KS, November 21-23.

Northeastern drops to the Contender's Bracket and will play the winner of Eastern Wyoming vs Western Nebraska at 4 pm on Saturday for the District B Championship.
