Northeastern Baseball Takes Down McCook Community College 7-6 In An Extra Inning Thriller to Advance To The Region IX Championship
Northeastern took Saturday's game in dramatic fashion, with a 7-6 walk-off victory over McCook. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the tenth when Riley Suarez doubled, scoring one run.
Suarez collected three hits in six at bats in the win. Suarez hit a home run to center field in the first inning, doubled in the tenth inning, and singled in the second inning.
The Indians got on the board in the first inning after Dalton Berg hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.
Northeastern captured the lead, 4-1, in the bottom of the first when Suarez homered to center field, scoring two runs, Aniel Del Orbe doubled, scoring one run, and George Greene singled, scoring one run.
McCook jumped back into the lead in the top of the second inning after Tyler Reyburn singled to center field, Owen Weales hit a sacrifice fly, Northeastern committed an error, and Northeastern committed an error, each scoring one run.
Del Orbe doubled down the left field line on an 0-2 count, which helped Northeastern tie the game at five in the bottom of the fourth.
A solo home run to right field by Berg gave McCook the lead, 6-5, in the top of the fifth.
Jose Victorio singled to center field, which helped Northeastern tie the game at six in the bottom of the ninth.
DDC Player of the Game, Keon Bandy earned the win for Northeastern. The hurler gave up five hits and one run over nine innings, striking out seven and walking three. Santiago Rodriguez took the loss for McCook. The pitcher went five and one-third innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two. Justin Dean opened the game for Northeastern. The pitcher surrendered five hits and five runs (three earned) over one inning, striking out none and walking one. Mikah Targett stepped on the hill first for McCook. The starter surrendered five hits and four runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking one.
