NJC splits series with Williston State College

Game 1

STERLING—The bats were strong for the Plainswomen during the first game of their doubleheader with Williston State College.  Northeastern Junior College (2-12 overall, 0-10 conference) was able to collect 19 hits and 21 runs during the 21-20 victory that went down to the wire in the seventh inning.

Williston State got off to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Plainswomen were able to counter and rally by tying the score 3-3 by the end of the first.  The yo-yo score would continue for both teams until the seventh inning when NJC was able to win the game by some selective base running, an infield single, error, and fielder's choice.

NJC sophomore pitcher Taylor Gilliland (1-3) was on the rubber for the Plainswomen pitching a complete seven innings facing 52 batters with 23 hits, 20 runs, 12 earned runs, four strikeouts, and added two RBIs offensively.

Freshman shortstop Caressa DeRossett was able to get on base all of her six at bats and brought in five RBIs and one homerun on the afternoon.  Sophomore Michaela Roscoe also reached base on all six of her at bats contributing one RBI and crossing the plate five times.

Game 2

The Plainswomen were able to hold Williston to one run each inning until the sixth when the Tetons scored five runs.  Alexis Espinoza faced 33 batters, gave up 13 hits, eight runs, two strike outs and three earned runs.

The next games for the Plainswomen will be March 22, 2014 at home against Otero Junior College at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
